Iodine for Metabolism

Speaking of the thyroid this week, this trace mineral (and essential nutrient) is important for thyroid function. The thyroid is responsible for:

  • control of metabolism
  • detoxification
  • growth and development

Therefore, iodine is a key component of metabolism. A lack of iodine can lead to:

  • enlarged thyroid gland (goiter)
  • lethargy
  • fatigue
  • weakness
  • slow metabolism
  • autism
  • weight gain
  • mental states (anxiety, depression)

What are good sources of iodine?

  • sea vegetables like kelp, arame, hiziki, kombu and wakame. kelp alone has 4x the RDA
  • fresh cranberries
  • organic (raw) yogurt
  • strawberries
  • Himalayan Sea Salt
  • Dairy products like raw milk and cheese (including goat products)
