Beneficial Bacteria: Gut Flora

‘Second Brain’, sounds pretty important, right? Something so prominent sounding has got to be referring to something like the heart or lungs, right? Think again, today we’re actually talking about your intestines, you know your gut, more specifically your flora! The heart, lungs, liver, and brain tend to play leading roles in the saga of our health world, and the gut undeserving gets a co-starring role. Well, the gut is actually where most health problems begins. There are more nerve cells and neurotransmitters in your gut than in the entire nervous system. Not to be overshadowed is the fact that 70-80% of the immune system is based in the gut. Bet if your were more aware of this then you would be more concerned about the health of your gut,  huh? A healthy gut means a healthy immune system, just like a shitty gut can mean a bad immune system. The intestinal tract is lined with over 100 trillion bacteria, that’s nearly 3 pounds! What is the importance/role of this system?

  • nutrient uptake
  • protection from pathogens, viruses, & opportunistic bacteria
  • nutrient creation (K2, butyric acid)
  • prevention systemic and gut inflammation
  • proper metabolism
  • weight regulation

It’s important to realize that inflammation that starts in the gut often leads to inflammation everywhere (plus we’re aware that inflammation is the killer that leads to disease). Problems that can cause discontent in the gut are:

  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
  • Irritable Bowl Syndrome (IBS)
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux disease (GERD)
  • Crohn’s disease
  • ulcerative colitis
  • Celiac disease

There are many links to the gut and mental behaviors, with correlations to autism and schizophrenia. How can you better take care of your gut health and the good bacteria hiding out there? There are certain things that can cause discontent:

  • antibiotics
  • birth control pills
  • food toxins (grains and legumes)
  • excess carbs and fructose
  • inflammation caused by much polyunsaturated fats and omega-6
  • chronic stress
  • lack sleep 
  • improper nutrient intake and deficiency

Probiotics help to regulate gut activity and improve flora health. How do can you improve gut health then?

  • fermented foods included sauerkraut, raw yogurt and raw kefir
  • avoid grains, starches and sugar- they feed bad bacteria and disrupt the balance of the GI tract (espeically grains, hence all the gluten intolerances and Celiac disease)
  • fish oil
  • include bone broths, the minerals and gelatin are ssothing for the digestive system and aid in nutrient assimilation
  • healthy fats like butter and coconut oil help fight bacteria and viruses.
  • drink raw milk with its beneficial enzymes and bacteria
