Feature Food: Peppers to rev up your metabolism

Peppers- they can come in all different colors and shapes. They add flavor, color and crunch to any fat-burner dish. We’ll start with the heavy hitter of peppers- capsaicin. This is where peppers’ fire come from. Interestingly they work on the tongues pain receptors, rather than on your actual taste buds. These have been linked to:

  • lower triglycerides
  • boost immunity
  • decrease the risk of stomach ulcers

Red peppers are a great source of lycopene (hence the color if you remember from tomatoes). Lycopene is a carotenoid linked to cancer health and prevention. Another carotenoid-cryptoxanthin- has shown promise in helping prevent lung cancer related smoking and secondhand smoke. Other nutrients:

  • Vitamin A and C: help prevent cell damage, which cause diseases
  • Vitamin K: promote proper blood clotting, strengthens bones and helps protect cells from oxidative damage
  • decent amount of fiber
